Myanmar military cuts wireless internet service amid protests over coup
"All wireless broadband data services be temporarily suspended until further notice," the Myanmar military said in a directive.
The Myanmar military suspended internet services Friday in the country amid ongoing street protests in opposition to a coup in February to oust elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
The military announced the shutdown Thursday, saying, "All wireless broadband data services be temporarily suspended until further notice," according to the Associated Press.
Access to mobile networks and all wireless access were cut off. However, internet services via fiber optic cable are still available.
A Norwegian telecom company Telenor, one of the largest carriers in the country, confirmed that its internet access in Myanmar was cut off.
Protesters around the world increasingly use apps and social media sites on the cellphone to quickly and stealthy mobilize and assemble.
So far, over 500 people have been killed in clashes with the police, according to Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster.
