South Korean authorities arrest impeached former leader Yoon Suk Yeol
South Korea's Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials requested an arrest warrant for Yoon late last month after he was impeached for the martial law declaration.
South Korean authorities on Tuesday arrested the impeached former President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to the country’s anti-corruption agency, which had been investigating Yoon on allegations he abused his authority when he declared martial law last month.
South Korea's Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials requested an arrest warrant for Yoon late last month after he was impeached for the martial law declaration. A court approved the request, which allows investigators to hold Yoon for up to 48 hours.
Yoon declared martial law Dec. 3, and South Korea’s parliament voted Dec. 14 to impeach him. He has since been suspended from office.
The arrest on Tuesday was the agency's second time attempting to arrest the former president, according to CNN. The first attempt was thwarted earlier this month after South Korean soldiers and presidential security officers blocked investigators and police from approaching the compound.
Yoon is wanted for questioning on the abuse allegations and on allegations he attempted to lead an insurrection, which is punishable by up life in prison, or even the death penalty.
