Man arrested and charged in murder of retired St. Louis police captain during riots
24-year-old man charged in death of retired Capt. David Dorn, who was protecting a friend's pawn shop.
A man was arrested and charged Sunday with the murder of a beloved retired St. Louis police captain who was shot multiple times while protecting a friend's pawn shop during rioting and looting in the city last week.
St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner announced that Stephan Cannon, 24, was charged with first-degree murder for the death of David Dorn, whose June 2 death was widely mourned as a loss of a community role model.
"Based upon the diligent work of the police department, collaboration with the Circuit Attorney’s Office, and the cooperation from the outraged community, we have issued charges for the tragic murder of former Captain David Dorn," Gardner said.
Even President Trump weighed in on the senseless killing when a group of looters broke into the pawn shop that Dorn was trying to protect.
In addition to murder, Cannon was charged with robbery, burglary, and unlawful possession of a firearm, the prosecutor's office said.
According to the criminal complaint, Cannon and other people can be seen on surveillance video entering the pawn shop and stealing several televisions. The video shows Cannon pointing the gun and Dorn falling to the ground, authorities said.
Dorn served 38 years in the St. Louis police department before becoming a police chief in a neighboring community.
