SCOTUS Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan to testify to Congress about budget on Tuesday
The two justices will meet with lawmakers on both the Senate and House Financial Services Appropriations subcommittees to discuss the court's $225.1 million budget request for fiscal year 2027.
Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are set to testify about the high court's budget in front of Congress on Tuesday, marking the first time since 2019 that justices will face members of Congress.
The two justices will meet with lawmakers on both the Senate and House Financial Services Appropriations subcommittees to discuss the court's $225.1 million budget request for fiscal year 2027.
The majority of the budget will go to salaries, but the justices are also expected to ask for $14.6 million for security enhancements, which comes after Barrett was the victim of a swatting incident in May.
The judiciary branch has also asked for a total of $921 million for security enhancements at federal courthouses nationwide, and is seeking $9.7 billion overall. The request is approximately $500 million more than 2026.
The hearing will mark the first time that Supreme Court justices have appeared before Congress since 2019, when Kagan and Justice Samuel Alito appeared in front of the House. Former Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer and Antonin Scalia testified in front of the Senate in 2011.
The first hearing is scheduled in front of the House panel at 10 a.m. Eastern. The Senate hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern.
