Houston police officer dies in helicopter crash
One other officer was injured in the deadly accident.
One Houston police officer is dead and one injured after a police helicopter went down on Saturday during a search for a reported body, the city revealed this morning.
A post on the city of Houston's Twitter account stated that shortly after 7 a.m. Mayor Sylvester Turner, had "ask[ed] the city to lift up the family of a [Houston Police] officer who died in a police helicopter crash earlier this morning."
"Two police officers were on board the chopper. At the time of the crash, they were conducting a search for a reported body in a bayou. Despite the valiant efforts of (rescuers and medical doctors), one Houston police officer succumbed to his injuries," Police Chief Art Acevedo said.
In a press conference shortly after the crash, Acevedo said rescuers "worked feverishly" at the scene and "literally had to cut the pilots out of the wreckage."
The chief added during the conference that the department was unaware what caused the crash.
