Base housing US troops in Syria attacked, allied Kurdish fighters killed

A base housing U.S. troops in Syria came under attack, resulting in the deaths of at least six allied Kurdish fighters, officials said Monday, after the U.S. launched strikes over the weekend in response to Iran-backed militias that have been targeting U.S. troops.

While there are no reports of casualties among U.S. service members, the U.S.-supported, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said Monday that a drone attacked a training ground in eastern Syria late Sunday evening, according to The Associated Press.

The area that was attacked, al-Omar base, is where the Kurdish forces' commando units train. It is unclear how many U.S. troops, if any, were at the base at the time of the attack.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-backed militias in Iraq, claimed responsibility for the attack and released a video of its fighters launching a drone.

The same group was responsible for a drone attack late last month that killed three U.S. service members in Jordan. The U.S. launched dozens of strikes in response against Iran-backed groups in Syria, Iraq and Yemen. Tensions have been particularly heightened in the region since Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists invaded Israel and killed about 1,200 people.
