Kennedy Center says 'no official communications' received from White House about replacing chair

President Trump said he would become the new chair of the center in a social media post on Friday night. In its official statement, the Kennedy Center referred to Trump only as POTUS.

The Kennedy Center responded to former President Trump's social media post on Saturday, saying it hasn't received "official communications" from the White House about Trump becoming its chair.

"The Kennedy Center is aware of the post made recently by POTUS on social media. We have received no official communications from the White House regarding changes to our board of trustees. We are aware that some members of our board have received termination notices from the administration," read the statement.

"Per the Center’s governance established by Congress in 1958, the chair of the board of trustees is appointed by the Center’s board members. There is nothing in the Center’s statute that would prevent a new administration from replacing board members; however, this would be the first time such action has been taken with the Kennedy Center’s board," the center also said in the statement.

Trump wrote on Friday night that he "decided to immediately terminate multiple individuals from the Board of Trustees, including the Chairman, who do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture."

Trump also wrote that the White House would "soon announce a new Board, with an amazing Chairman, DONALD J. TRUMP!"

Current Board Chairman David Rubenstein hasn't commented publicly on the situation. He was set to retire in January 2025 but delayed it until September 2026 to allow the board more time to find a new chair.

Former President George W. Bush appointed him chairman in 2004.
