Actress Anne Heche, has died at the age of 53 following her hospitalization for severe burns after crashing her car into a private residence and igniting a fire.

Heche spent a week in the hospital following the accident, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries on Friday, according to the Guardian.

A representative of her family confirmed Heche's death saying “We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend."

“Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy. Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact," the statement continued.

She was previously declared brain dead earlier on Friday.

Heche crashed her car into a Los Angeles home last Friday, but fled the scene and went on to crash again into a Mar Vista home, which triggered the fire that ultimately inflicted fatal burns.

Initially, medical officials expected Heche to survive. It remains unclear if she was intoxicated at the time of either accident, though authorities discovered a "bottle with a red cap" in her car after the crash.

Heche achieved mainstream success with her roles in "Volcano" and "Six Days Seven Nights." She later voiced Suyin Beifong in "The Legend of Kora."
