Michelle Obama says married 30 years to former President Barack Obama, 20 of them were 'great'
The former first lady made the comment on CBS while promoting a new book and and a forthcoming Netflix special.
Former first lady Michelle Obama on Thursday commented again about the institution of marriage and her 30-year marriage with husband and former President Barak Obama, suggesting she "fell out" with him for 10 years.
Obama made the comments on the "CBS Mornings" show on which she also argued people too often "glamorize marriage," which is in fact "hard."
"If I fell out with him for 10 [years,] and we had a great 20 years, I’d take those odds anytime," the former first lady said in response to a question about remarks she made last year that for a decade during their relationship, she "couldn’t stand" her husband, according to The Hill newspaper.
"We glamorize marriage," the 59-year-old Obama also said. "In this day and age, marriage is more about the dress, and the dresses, and the proposal, and the honeymoon and all the stuff around it. And young people aren’t ready for the real of marriage.
On the show promoting a new book and and a forthcoming Netfilx special, she also said: "A lot of young people quit on marriage over things that are just a part of the commitment. ... It's incumbent upon us – people who have had successful marriages – to be really honest about the fact that making a commitment to be with someone means you compromise, and compromise ain’t always fun."
