Pope Francis is warning about the possible adverse effects of artificial intelligence and the need to monitor the technology in his message for World Day of Peace.

The cautionary message came Tuesday when the Vatican released the theme of the pope's message for World Day of Peace, which is Sept. 21.

Artificial intelligence has made "remarkable advances" and is "having a rapidly increasing impact" in all areas of society, "Pope Francis calls for an open dialogue on the meaning of these new technologies, endowed with disruptive possibilities and ambivalent effects," the Vatican said.

The pope will discuss "the need to be vigilant and to work so that a logic of violence and discrimination does not take root in the production and use of such devices," according to the Vatican.

Francis will also discuss concerns artificial intelligence could "fuel conflicts" and how there is an "urgent need" to use it responsibly, per the Holy See.

This is not the first time Francis has addressed controversial topics. He has been vocal about his stance on topics ranging from climate change to gender ideology.
