Former Attorney General Bill Barr says Trump indictment 'very damning' even if 'half of it is true'
"This idea of presenting Trump as a victim here--the victim of a witch hunt--is ridiculous," Barr said.
Trump's former Attorney General Bill Barr said Sunday that the federal indictment against former President Donald Trump is "very damning" even if "half" of the materials presented in the document are true.
"If even half of [the indictment] is true then he's toast. It's a very detailed indictment, and it's very, very damning," Barr told Fox News Sunday after his former boss was indicted on 37 federal counts last week related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
"This idea of presenting Trump as a victim here--the victim of a witch hunt--is ridiculous. Yes, he's been a victim in the past. Yes his adversaries have obsessively pursued him with phony claims, and I've been at his side defending him when he is a victim, but this is much different. He's not a victim here," Barr also said. "He was totally wrong that he had the right to have those documents. Those documents are among the most sensitive secrets the country has."
Trump has maintained his innocence and vowed to "never" drop out of the 2024 presidential race, even if he is convicted of the crimes he is accused of.
Barr has clashed with Trump after the 2020 election. For example, he said last year that the former president "has neither the temperament nor persuasive powers" needed to be a leader.
Trump, meanwhile, said last month that Barr is a "sloppy, lethargic mess."
