Three charged in fatal shooting of Michigan store security guard enforcing face mask rule
Guard allegedly shot after insisting shopper wear face mask under pandemic restrictions.
Three people have been charged in the fatal shooting of a Family Dollar security guard in Flint, Mich., that prosecutors said Monday began with an argument over pandemic related shopping restrictions.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said 45-year-old Sharmel Lashe Teague engaged in an argument May 1 with 43-year-old security guard Calvin James Munerlyn after he informed Teague that she needed to use a face mask while shopping.
"Teague began yelling at Munerlyn and spit at him and Munerlyn told her to leave the store and instructed a cashier not to serve her," the prosecutor's press release said.
Later, two individuals subsequently identified as Teague's 44-year-old husband Larry Edward Teague and her 23-year-old son Ramonyea Travon Bishop, came to the store and "confronted Munerlyn" before Bishop allegedly shot the security guard in the back of the head, the prosecutors said.
"From all indications, Mr. Munerlyn was simply doing his job in upholding the Governor's Executive Order related to the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of store employees and customers," Leyton said.
"The death of Calvin Munerlyn is senseless and tragic and those responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent under the law," he said.
Leyton said he charged Bishop, Larry Teague, and Sharmel Teague with first-degree murder.
While Sharmel Teague is currently in custody, the two men remained at large late Monday. Authorities are requesting any information people may have to help locate the husband and son.
