The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Wednesday announced that former NFL coach Bill Belichick has accepted a coaching position at the school, as the new head coach of the UNC Tar Heels.
Belichick is most known for his tenure as the head coach of the New England Patriots, where he coached the team to six Super Bowl titles. Belichick has also won two other Super Bowls as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. He retired in January.
The University said Belichick has agreed to coach the team for at least five years, but the deal still needs to be approved by the University’s Board of Trustees and UNC Board of Governors.
“This is an exciting day for Carolina football and our University,” Chancellor Lee Roberts said in a statement. “Carolina is committed to excellence and to creating an opportunity to succeed in everything we do, from the classroom to the field of competition.
"I know after speaking with Coach Belichick that he shares that commitment," he continued. "His legacy speaks for itself, and we look forward to working together on the next chapter of Carolina football.”
Belichick, whose father was an assistant coach of the Tar Heels from 1953-55, said he was "excited" about coaching at the North Carolina school. It will be his first time coaching college football.
“I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times," Belichick said. "I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”
