A gunman opened fire in at least two locations on the Michigan State University campus Monday night, killing three and injuring at least five before touching off a massive manhunt that ended with the shooter killing himself.

Police confirmed the fatalities and injuries shortly before midnight Monday, and university officials closed the school for the next two days.

Authorities said they were searching for a short, black man wearing black clothes and red sneakers. The suspected gunman was captured on security video footage released by the police.

The suspect was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Deputy Police Chief Chris Rozman said.

"This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight, but we have remained laser-focused on the safety of our campus, our students, and our surrounding community," Rozman said.

The suspect first opened fire around 8:40 p.m. after which authorities issued a shelter-in-place order, Fox News reported. A second shooting reportedly occurred at 9:26 p.m.

Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer confirmed that she had been briefed on the incident, saying "let's wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight." The MSU mascot is a Spartan.

I’ve been briefed on the shooting at Michigan State University. The Michigan State Police along with @msupolice, local law enforcement and first responders are on the ground. Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more.
