Rep. Denver Riggleman ousted by delegates in Republican nominating contest
The Republican congressman upset conservatives last year when he officiated a same-sex wedding.
Representative Denver Riggleman, a Republican who last year came under fire from conservatives for officiating a same-sex wedding, lost the nomination contest during the Virginia 5th Congressional District's drive-thru style convention held Saturday.
Social conservative Bob Good—whose positions include ending birthright citizenship, establishing English as the nation's official language, and holding to the traditional definition of marriage—defeated Riggleman with 58 percent of the delegates' votes during the event held in a church parking lot, district GOP chairman Melvin Adams reported, according to Politico.
The outlet noted that following the convention but prior to the results being announced, Riggleman warned about reports of "voting irregularities" and "ballot stuffing."
"Voting irregularities and ballot stuffing has been reported in multiple counties in the #VA05," Riggleman tweeted just before midnight. "Voter fraud has been a hallmark of this nomination process and I will not stand for it. @VA_GOP needs to reevaluate their priorities. We are evaluating all our options at this time."
Democratic Illinois Rep. Dan Lipinski and Republican Republican Iowa Rep. Steve King both lost in primaries earlier this year, making Riggleman the third incumbent House member to be defeated in his nominating contest.
