Former President Donald Trump is calling for states to return to paper ballots and to end no-excuses absentee ballots so that results can be finalized on Election Day.

"I call them the fake vote store," Trump told the "Just the News, Not Noise" television show in an interview aired Wednesday night. "That's the mail-in ballots. We shouldn't have mail-in ballots, unless somebody's very, very sick or it's military far away."

Historically, absentee, by-mail ballots were meant only for voters who had a legitimate reason for being unable to vote in person on Election Day, such as military deployment overseas.

States should also "go to one-day voting," Trump added. "They should go to paper ballots. And you would have elections that everybody could be proud of. Because right now, this country is a laughingstock all over the world. They're laughing at our stupid elections."

Trump's comments come amid declining public trust in the voting system. Polling indicates confidence in the integrity of U.S. elections dropping amid a significant segment of the electorate, especially Republicans.
