Mexico prepares to launch app for migrants to alert consulates if detained in US
Mexico Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente on Friday announced the creation of the app, which is expected to launch next month as part of Mexico's "Know Your Rights" program.
Mexican officials recently announced that the country was working on an app for Mexican migrants in the U.S. that would alert nearby consulates if they are detained by U.S. authorities.
The announcement is part of the country's preparations for President-elect Donald Trump's return to the White House next month, where he promised to conduct a massive deportation operation that targets all immigrants who are in the United States illegally.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to protect the human rights of Mexican citizens in the U.S., according to Axios.
Mexico Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente on Friday announced the creation of the app, which is expected to launch next month as part of Mexico's "Know Your Rights" program. The program will also include 329 legal advisors at all 53 consulates in the U.S. which aims to educate migrants on their rights.
"I have personally attended several open meetings where the key message is to tell our fellow citizens that they are not alone and will not be alone," De la Fuente said at a press conference announcing the app.
The secretary also encouraged illegal immigrants who have children that were born in the United States to register them with local consulates in the country. Trump's border czar Tom Homan said the deportation plans include parents who are illegally in the country, even if their children are legal citizens. The children would not be deported.
"We strongly encourage everyone to register with our consulates as this enables us to provide legal protection when needed," De la Fuente said.
Mexico is also preparing for a possible influx of migrants if Trump's deportation plans succeed, which could limit the neighboring country's ability to manage the flow of illegal immigrants who are fleeing Central America.
