Computer problems stall flights in major Florida airports

A technical issue has resulted in the halting of flights into and out of several major Florida airports.

En Route Automation Modernization is a computer system used by air traffic controllers to manage aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration told the Washington Examiner that a complication with ERAM had led to the delays.

"The [Federal Aviation Administration] has slowed the volume of traffic into Florida airspace due to an air traffic computer issue that is being resolved," the FAA also told the outlet.

Among those airports affected are Palm Beach International Airport, Miami International Airport, Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, Orlando International Airport, Southwest Florida International Airport, Naples Airport, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

American Airlines said the halt was "affecting all carriers in and out of the area due to an issue at the MIA ATC control center" at the Miami International Airport, per Fox News.

The major delays follow a substantial number of cancellations in recent weeks in part due to a large winter storm that ravaged the northeast. Southwest Airlines in particular drew scrutiny for the sheer proportion of cancelled and delayed flights, with even the Transportation Department vowing to probe its handling of the issue.
