Campaign-style video by Youngkin draws 2024 speculation; GOP field growing by the day
Youngkin won the governorship of Virginia in 2021 against former Democrat Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
Virginia GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin drew speculation after releasing a campaign-style video earlier this week, causing talk about a possible 2024 presidential bid.
“It’s pretty overwhelming to contemplate the future of America,” Youngkin says in the video.
“It’s such an honor to be here with proud Americans who carry on President Reagan’s cherished legacy," he continued. "He brought peace by projected strength. At a time when it’s easy for us to lose faith, to worry that we are indeed that one generation when freedom becomes extinct, there are lights shining.”
Youngkin won the governorship of Virginia in 2021 against former Democrat Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who served as governor from 2014 to 2018.
“We can usher in a new era of American values,” Youngkin stated. “President Ronald Reagan changed lives, and now it’s our turn. A time to choose life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness over oppression and dictatorial rule. That stakes are high and the consequences couldn’t be greater.”
Other potential figures that are expected to launch a GOP presidential campaign in coming weeks include former New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie and current governor of North Dakota, Doug Burgum. South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott filed papers with the FEC on Friday to get into the race.
DeSantis is expected to enter the race in the coming days, according to multiple reports.
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said in an interview that she welcomes DeSantis to the race.
"Welcome to the race. We’ve been waiting," she said in an interview with The Hill.
