Harris scores lowest net approval rating of any VP in history of NBC poll

Vice President Kamala Harris has largely trailed her running mate in public opinion polls, though a recent NBC News survey suggests she may be superlatively unpopularly with electorate compared to the vice presidents of recent memory.

Just 32% of respondents to the survey expressed a positive view of Harris compared to 49% who held a negative view. That -17 net approval rating marks the lowest for any VP in the history of the poll.

Under former President Barack Obama in 2010, then-Vice President Joe Biden scored a +1 rating with a 34%-33% approval/disapproval rating.

Mike Pence, in 2019, earned a -4 (34%-38%), while Dick Cheney in 2003 enjoyed a +23 (47-24). Bill Clinton's vice president, Al Gore, also scored well in 1995 with a +15 (42-27).

Harris has remained largely out of the media spotlight since assuming the vice presidency. Biden previously tapped her to serve as his border czar, though she has thus far taken little public action.

Behind the scenes, rumors have swirled that Harris is a difficult boss for whom to work, with numerous aides leaving in rapid succession in late 2021 and early 2022.
