Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum was killed Sunday in a single-vehicle crash in his home country of Keyna.

Kiptum was driving the vehicle when it veered off the road, went into a ditch, then hit a tree, killing him and his coach, who was a passenger, according to the Associated Press

The 24-year-old Kiptum set the world record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:00:35.

The time made him the first person to run the marathon in under 2 hours, 1 minute in an official race.

Kiptum set the world record in only his third appearance in an elite marathon and was a top contender for gold at the Olympics in Paris this year.
