NFL approves sale of Washington Commanders, fines Dan Snyder $60 million
Snyder originally purchased the team in 1999, when it was still known as the Washington Redskins, for $800 million.
The National Football League approved the sale of the Washington Commanders to Josh Harris unanimously on Thursday and subsequently fined owner Dan Snyder $60 million after an investigation determined that his administrators withheld revenue from other teams and he sexually harassed a former team employee.
The record sale saw Harris purchase the team for $6.05 billion, the Associated Press reported. Snyder's fine is 1% of the sale price.
Snyder originally purchased the team in 1999, when it was still known as the Washington Redskins, for $800 million. The team adopted its current name in 2022 after ditching the older moniker in 2020. During the interim, they played as the Washington Football Team.
The investigation did not conclude that Snyder was personally aware of financial transgressions, but did find that team executives withheld $11 million in revenues that should have been shared with other teams.
It also concluded that Snyder sexually harassed former team employee Tiffani Johnston. Snyder denies her allegations.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a subsequent press conference that "[t]he findings do speak for themselves. In both cases, it’s inappropriate, it’s wrong, it doesn’t match our values."
